About The Conductor

The Conductor is mailed bi-monthly to Society members. Below are links to .PDF-format digital versions. Use the ‘Conductor Newsletter’ email link above to send comments to the editor.

Note that each bi-monthly edition is mailed to members to arrive on the first day of odd-numbered months. Out of deference to dues-paying members, the electronic version here is not available until that day. Use this dropdown to select a newsletter from our archive to read:

Travel/Study

One of the most enjoyable ways to study is to travel to some of the great sites that have contributed to the development of Western Civilization. Slides are good, but being there is better; so for the past 30+ years, Gentrain has offered trips to the pyramids (both Egyptian and Maya/Aztec), ancient Athens, Rome, Venice, London, Chicago, New York City and other significant sites both foreign and domestic.

Phil Nash, who was responsible for developing the Gentrain program, provided wise advice concerning the philosophy of travel study. “Do not take ‘off the shelf’ itineraries,” he said. Dr. Nash believed that the bottom line for any travel/study trip is always education. Good advice. Instructor/tour leaders customize each trip to reflect or expand upon the material covered in the Gentrain course.

Najm Akbar

I am Muhammad Najm Akbar. Call me Najm.
Born in Multan, Pakistan, I had my initial education there.
In the United States, I have graduated twice from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, MA 1995 and MALD, 2011, and have a graduate degree in History from Fresno State, 2022. Middlebury awarded me an MA in Teaching of Foreign Language, in 2009.

Alia and I have lived In Monterey since 2005. Our children are married and engaged in their professional lives in New York.

Our biggest delight is our two granddaughters, the eldest turns four soon, and the youngest is about a year and a half old.

I remained part of the Pakistan Foreign Service for two decades and at the Defense Language Institute taught Urdu for thirteen years until 2018.

I joined the MPC pool of adjunct history instructors in 2022 and have taught courses in Gentrain, World History, US History, and History of World Religions.
