The Gentrain (General Education Train of Courses) Program has been at Monterey Peninsula College since 1974. It is an interdisciplinary course in Western history and is presented eight four-week courses throughout the school year on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:10 -10:00 am to be completed in four semesters. It can be taken for credit (one unit per four-week class) or non-credit. An team of four instructors, each with a specialty, discuss literature/drama, philosophy/religion, history, and art. Guest lecturers are added for science presentations. The Gentrain staff also lead Travel/Study trips to great sites that significantly contributed to the development of Western Civilization.
The Gentrain Society formed in 1983 to help financially support the Gentrain Program. Dues of $30/person and $45/couple, are paid annually. Programs of the Society include special lectures usually on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month (free of charge), Short Courses in two-week, two-hour units on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, field trips and some social events. The Gentrain Society members receive a bi-monthly newsletter, The Conductor, a free MPC parking permit decal for the Wednesday/Friday lectures, and postcard reminders about the Lectures and Short Courses. The Society also maintains a Gentrain Scholarship Fund.
